Ainsworth House

The George Ainsworth House was constructed by Cade Allen, a noteworthy builder best known for his distinctive stone-clad homes in the Allendale neighborhood. Allen’s unique building style helped shape the visual landscape of St. Petersburg from the 1920s through the 1950s.  The Allendale neighborhood is particularly notable for its serpentine road network, which is a unique feature for a city that is characterized by a gridiron pattern of development, as well as its high ground and mature tree canopy which give many of the homes an estate quality.

The Ainsworth House is significant for its distinctive method of construction and use of materials.  The granite used on the house exterior can be found only on other Cade Allen-built homes in St. Petersburg. Allen shipped the granite, which is not a local material, from Tennessee, Georgia and the Carolinas to construct his distinctive buildings. The Ainsworth House is one of nearly two dozen homes he built that were fully clad in the materials. Allen’s use of stone is rare in St. Petersburg where wood, stucco, brick and concrete are the most common materials used for siding in the city.
