The Almon Jones-Jay Black House, located in the Allendale Terrace neighborhood, was constructed by Cade Allen, a noteworthy builder in St. Petersburg. Allen, who greatly contributed to the visual landscape of the city from the 1920s through 1950s, is probably most known for his distinctive construction style which historian Ray Arsenault describes as a “curious but striking mixture of Westchester County, New York-style stone mansions and hollow tile and stucco Spanish Castles, some looking like fortresses and others like California-style missions”. The City has identified forty-one Cade Allen-built residences in St. Petersburg. Thirty-three of these homes are located in the Allendale Terrace Subdivision generally located between 34th Avenue North and 42nd Avenue North and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. St North and 12th Street North.
Allen’s career in St. Petersburg spans from 1923 to 1952 and reflects a variety of popular contemporary designs from the Mediterranean Revival to the Split Level and Ranch. During the 1920s, Allen primarily designed Mediterranean Revival style buildings. One of few exceptions is the Almon Jones-Jay Black House which was designed in the Italian Renaissance style. Allen’s designs became more diversified in the 1930s and 1940s when he constructed Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Italian Renaissance, Spanish Eclectic, Ranch and Split Level style buildings. |
