Once Upon A Time; We All Begin As Children is a two-part work consisting of a five foot tall mixed media mural/installation and  a 35 foot long alphabet frieze in the children’s section.  The work suggests that the library gives it readers access to factual information as well as the world of imaginative fiction.

The painted and collaged backdrop of the mural  recalls the traditional textile samplers.  It features scenes from favorite  books and animals and plants common to Florida.   A ledge mounted near the top of the backdrop displays five sculpture-rod puppets of popular authors.  A shelf mounted near the center of the backdrop features a sculpture-rod puppet of Laura Ingalls Wilder writing at her desk. Other authors depicted on the installation include William Shakespeare, E.B White, Alice Walker, Virginia Woolf, Emily Dickenson, Faith Ringgold, and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The alphabet freize  located above the windows in the children=s section celebrates the fact that reading and writing begin in childhood with the mastering of the alphabet.
