Pedestrian fatalities now account for about 12 percent of all deaths related to motor vehicle crashes in the country. More than a fifth of all children ages five to nine killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians. The age group with the highest rate of pedestrian fatalities are those 70 and over. Bicyclists accounted for 13 percent of all non-motorist traffic fatalities in 2001. Pedestrians accounted for 85 percent, and the remaining 2 percent were skateboard riders, roller skaters, etc. Please refer to the charts below for State and County statistics.

Important Safety Tips
Follow these safety rules to reduce the risk of being injured or killed while walking or bicycling.
Pedestrian Safety
Look both ways and behind (at cross-streets) as you cross the street.
Cross at cross-walks or intersections.
Obey the cross walk signals.
When walking next to a roadway, always walk against traffic.
Wear bright or reflective clothing at night.
Bicyclist Safety
Bicyclists and Motorists MUST maintain a mutual respect for one another.
Bicyclists must obey all automobile traffic laws including:
Stop at stop signs and lights,
Use hand signals to turn, slow down, or stop,
Wear a helmet if you under 16 years of age,
Give pedestrians the right-of-way (especially on the sidewalk),
Ride to the right, with traffic,
Never riding more than two abreast,
Don't impede traffic,
When on the sidewalk, use voice commands to notify the pedestrian that you're passing ("Good morning" - "To your right" - "Hello") OR use a bell,
Have a front and rear light on your bike when riding past sundown,
Make sure your bike is properly maintained and in good working condition by following the ABCs of riding:
