St. Petersburg Bicycle Rodeos
As a part of the ´Education' portion of our Three ´Es' (Engineering, Enforcement, & Education) program, the City of St Petersburg conducts Bicycle Rodeos in an effort to decrease crash rates among children by instructing children and parents on the safety practices involved in safely riding a bicycle.
What is a Bicycle Rodeo?
A bicycle rodeo is comprised of an obstacle course that mimics "real-life" situations. Students practice avoiding road hazards such as tree limbs, pot holes, rocks, etc., scanning for automobiles, correct riding techniques, bicycle safety checks, and intersection safety. Additionally, students and parents learn how to properly fit helmets.
Stations Include:
Helmet Fitting: Teaches kids how to fit and wear helmets properly.
Bike Shop: Teaches kids basic bicycling sizing and maintenance.
Seeing and Being Seen: Teaches kids the importance of watching where they are going.
Chaos Corners: Teaches kids the reasons for traffic laws.
Demon Driveway: Teaches kids to avoid the biggest cause of car/bike accidents for young riders: riding out of the driveway without looking.
Crazy Crossroads: Teaches kids to stop at stop signs and maneuver through intersections.
Who's there?: Teaches kids to look behind for traffic.
Rock Dodge: Teaches kids control and balance.
Dodge-em Drive: Teaches kids to deal with assorted driveway hazards.
Who is the St. Petersburg Bicycle Rodeo Team?
The St. Petersburg Bicycle Rodeo Team is comprised of city employees who are specially trained to conduct bicycle rodeos and to instruct students in the importance of bicycle safety. Members from the Mayor's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee also assist with the event.
How do I get a Bicycle Rodeo in my area?
The City of St. Petersburg holds bicycle rodeos during community events that are advertised citywide, via newspaper, radio, television, etc., and open to the public. The hosting agency, organization, etc. must have at least ten (10) to twenty (20) volunteers, depending on the expected number of participants, available to assist with the rodeo.
