IMPORTANT PROGRAM/CAMP REGISTRATION INFORMATION:   

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve program fees have changed as approved by the Mayor and City Council, effective October 1, 2007.  Registration fees have been in place for city recreation programs for many years. The city's resident and non-resident pricing now applies to all "fee" classes and day camps at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve and Pinellas Pioneer Settlement. More information.

All programs meet or take place at the
Lake Maggiore Environmental Education Center
located at 1101 Country Club Way S
unless otherwise stated.

Tram Tours run everyday at 1 pm. A tram tour is also available on Saturdays at 10 am. This tour is a great way to see the preserve. Learn about our history,  alligators, gopher tortoises, birds and wild flowers. Cost: admission plus a $2.00 tram fee. Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is closed on Mondays for maintenance.

WEEKLY PROGRAMS
NEW! Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00  - 7:00pm
WALK ON THE WILD SIDE: EVENING FITNESS WALK - Join Holly Harriman, a Neuromuscular Massage Therapist, in a 45 minute walk that includes warm-up before and stretching afterwards. This gentle exercise program is designed for the working professional to work on the stiffness that comes from sitting or standing too long. Cost: $4.00 each day.

Wednesdays, 11:15 am
JUNGLE BOOGIE –
For ages 3 - 5, from crafts to walks in the preserve, your child will learn about Florida's natural ecosystems, animals, and plants. Cost: Admission for the child of $1.50 plus a $1.00 program fee. Parents are encouraged to stay.

Saturdays, 9:30 am - 12:30  pm
NATURE'S ELEMENTS -
A Saturday adventure with Damon "Chep" Chepren. Children will learn about butterflies, plants, gopher tortoises, and many other species.  Trips into the preserve will provide an exhilarating learning experience. Ages 4 - 7. Cost: $10.00 per class, $32.00 per month for four classes. No class on November 1st.

July 4, 8:00 am

BIRD WALK - Our preserve is an oasis for migratory birds in an urban city. Discover the birds that frequent the preserve such as: Blue-gray gnatcatchers, black-and-white warblers, and tufted titmice. Cost: Free.

 

July 5, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

UNDERSTANDING USES OF HERBS AND SPICES - Join Mona Radler for an intoxicating class on herbs and spices. Learn their uses in the kitchen and biologically. The aroma alone will inspire you to use them! Cost: $15.00

 

July 8, 6:00 pm

FLORIDA STYLE GARDENING SERIES: OVERVIEW OF FLORIDA FRIENDLY LANDSCAPING - Explore the nine principles of Florida Friendly Landscaping. Gardening to attract birds and butterflies also covered. Cost: $10.00

 

July 12, 11:30 am

ALLIGATOR WALK - Learn about the natural history of the alligator, its habitat, eating habits and young. This walk will open your eyes to the fascinating and mysterious life of the American Alligator. Space is limited to 15, call to reserve your spot! Cost: $3.00 Adults, $1.50 children

FLORIDA STYLE GARDENING SERIES: WATER-WISE - This class covers an introduction to landscape water issues, including components and management of irrigation systems, micro-irrigation, rain barrels, and time clock controller. Cost: $10.00

 

July 18, 10:30 am

NATURE WALK - Enjoy a leisurely walk through the preserve with a Ranger. You will learn new facts about Florida's habitats and the animals that call our preserve home. Cost: $3.00 Adults, $1.50 children.

 

July 21, 8:00 pm

NIGHT HIKE – GATORS, SPIDERS, AND FROGS...OH MY! Star gazing, spider sniffing, alligator spotting, disappearing heads, and art in the dark. Come join in on the fun. Space is limited to 15 people. Paid registration is required to guarantee a space. Cost: $3.00 Adults, $1.50 children

 

July 22, 6:30 pm

FLORIDA STYLE GARDENING SERIES: LANDSCAPE DESIGN THE FLORIDA FRIENDLY WAY - Lean landscape design concepts and processes, design tools provided. Concepts taught on how to conduct a site analysis, use the right plant in the right place, and how and where to research plants for proper selection. Cost: $10.00

 

July 25, 10:30 am

WILDFLOWER WALK - Boyd Hill Nature Preserve boasts many varieties of wildflowers. Learn their names and examine their beauty on this stroll through the preserve. Cost: $3.00 Adults, $1.50 children

 

July 28, 6:30 - 7:30 pm

NATURALIST NIGHT OUT: THE BAD THE UGLY AND THE MISUNDERSTOOD - Can buzzards be beautiful? Flowers fiendish? Spiders spectacular? Some of the plants and animals may not be as bad as people think they are. Space is limited, so call to reserve your space today! Cost: $3.00 adults, $1.50 children.
