Comments:
keep the arts center open during art walk, the block of empty stores on central should be painted by the owner, code inforcement would not allow home owners to leave our houses unpainted , bare-wood exposed and shabby
City does excellent job with it's many special events now. No need to increase the number!
I am also a member of arts/cultural organizations.
Because of culture there is civilization. Because of artists writing was developed so that people could better share ideas. The Arts are sorely challenged in the US. St. Petersburg, by its numerous museums and art organizations, could set an example to the rest of the country. Step up and actively promote the wonderful culture that we have in Pinellas County!
The Arts are important to any area, and have be a key to the recent growth and livability of St Pete.
This survey asks subjective questions: Words like "enhance" "develop" and "strengthen" mean nothing without specific examples.
Vibrant, flourishing arts community will attract businesses as well
The best way to help is with cash; let us do the rest. No master adminstrator. We don't care about a sister city 1,000 miles away. keep our focus HERE. Don't make new educational programs, point people in our direction where the programs already exist. And we already collaborate. The new website is a great idea; thanks! So is the program re: diverse board members (if that does not take away funds or focus from the essential grants, which we need more than anything...THAT will help retain the best and brightest more than any other government program). Finally, stop wasting money on The Mahaffey; reading that budget is an insult to all other cultural arts organizations. OR make it a non-profit itself, and let other local NFPs run it. It is terribly difficult to see the Mahaffey fail time after time after time, despite the embarrassing amount of money spent on it, all the while solutions seem so evident to those of us who have to deal with and solve problems with so much less.
In this questionnaire I get a whiff of more bureaucratic politics. There are plenty of volunteers interested in the arts. There are plenty of city employees who could pick up a ball or two.
embracing of the Arts as both a cultural as well as economic engine which will bring people to St. Petersburg.
I would stress in all of the survey items that involve programming, that high quality, and highly qualified arts educators, teaching artists and program developers/mangers be contracted and compensted appropriately--no popsicle stick arts & crafts!
do you really think a Mayor with Creationist views would have any appreciation for the Arts. I think not. - Christine Dickson
the arts are what makes a city great ... the arts are what makes people want to visit a city ... we must get, keep and maintain the arts in St. Pete
As a community and youth arts advocate, I am greatly concerned about the lack of accessible quality arts education opportunities for all age groups and abilities. Without a populace that is educated about, and appreciative of the arts, all efforts to increase the cultural development of the city are compromised.
The arts can save our city's economy. Look at the long-term picture.
The Arts are vital to a thriving community!!!!
Planning for the futue becomes very difficult when the past is so quickly forgotten .Who rembers John Stanly who founded the arts center,or Dee D wholead it through early hard times,or Bob Hodgel the first,Or John Eckert who made St. Pete aware of ceramics, or contempory Gallrty ,the fist to show current art, orthe city arts commission,Oh,Yes, and me with a whole string of firsts. THe foundation was laid and now is forgotten major recognized artist luberry
All depends on what kind of art/s St. Petersburg wants to support and to be known for. It can't possibly excel in all things for all people. It would have to be another New York for that. St. Petersburg needs a niche, something which it has as yet developed as far as I can tell. Something fresh. Something relevant for our times and things to come. I guess I'm talking about vision. Maybe it's good the old Baywalk failed. Frankly, I thought it was kind of boring.
Always pay attention to highest quality arts experiences!
City should not be a partner in the overall development; BUT should act as a venture catalyst and once arts and culture in a particular genre gets to critical mass, get out of the way. City has proven with their track record that they can be helpful to incubate but are terrible at coaching, developing, and mentoring for the medium and long term.
I HAVE A STUDIO AT ARTLOFTS@FLORIDA CRAFTSMEN WITH 18 OTHER ARTISTS AND WE NEED CITY SUPPORT AND EXPOSURE TO INCREASE THE AWARENESS OF CITIZENS IN THE AREA THAT ARTLOFTS EVEN EXISTS. IT NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME THAT SO MANY OF ST PETE CITIZENS HAVE NO IDEA THAT ARTLOFTS AND THE PROFESSIONAL CREATIVITY THAT IT OFFERS EXISTS. ST PETE SHOULD BE THE HUB OF ART IN FLORIDA AND NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AS SUCH INSTEAD OF HOVERING ON DISASTER. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US TO EXPRESS OUR IDEAS AND CONCERNS. KAS TURNER
my true feelings is that everythinh is art, I am happy that the arts group is organizing or reorganizing , my sincere hope is that it will be all inclusive and fair in its decision, we are living in a melting pot I do fell that we should stengthen our relationship with Japan and other sister cities but before we do that we need to prehaps strengthen our relationship with the various artist of diffrent culturals here in St. Pete. and pinellas county. My conclusion is this is great and I hope to work with the group in the future
I feel the key is for arts groups & city to work/plan together first before we go promoting St. Pete as an arts mecca. In the past efforts have failed do to lack of coordination such as publicizing the Friday art walks and then finding venues listed closed or with different hours posted on their doors. When we do have events, artist participants need to dialog with visitors, explaining their works and making it more interesting rather than just sitting in a chair and giving visitors a brief nod. Parking is also an issue which discourages visitors from spending time. We also need a police presense in areas where visitors may be. I never see a police car etc. anywhere downtown. Take a hint from NYC, whee they turned around the Times Square area by having lots of police visible.
There are so many who give the time to the arts it needs to be valued
we need opportunities for new emerging artists to show and sell their work, i.e. art in the park etc. where value is placed on the purchase of hand made items and we need to educate people that art is for everyone, not a lofty thing they cant understand but something that eveyrone can enjoy and participate in
We should all work together to encourage creativity. It will unify our community.
I think St. Pete could thrive if we embraced our creative side
Please understand the meaning of "The Arts" and include ALL aspects into your agenda.
Help promote sculpture-walk a private-public combo that is asking for no public funds
St. Petersburg is unique for it's beauty and art. It should be advertised and encouraged to promote the city as a place to live and enjoy.
The Arts are vital to our community and we need as much support as possible. The arts allow a community to grow and flourish. Everyone benefits including local businesses
Put cheaper Public Art in more places rather than spend big money on one project.
It would be great to have an artist studio space subsidized by the city.
Better newspaper coverage of local small art galleries, not just the non-profits and museums
Music, live theater and the creative arts make a city vibrant, enriching all who live and visit here.
The unification of artists to support the downtown revitalization is key
I have found that most of our locals do not attend or support performing arts or museum arts as they do in Europe. If it's free they will come.
I think there hsould e a section of the waterfront parks celebratin each of our two sister cities: St Petersburg, Russia, and Takamatsu, Japan. We already have a aprk commenorating Peter Demns, our foundre, WHy not develop more foi a Russion them in that park> And whynot see if Takamatsu mightn't donate a Japanese garen near, say the Fine Arts Museum - Takamatsu Park? Could we send them a palm arboretum?
Promote St Petersburg through the arts...Get away from the sports aspect...Set St Petersburg apart from other communities,,Everyone has sports teams...Not everone is sports oriented
I especially enjoy the performances in the park, like theater and orchestra. Let's do more programs like these. Bring back the Nutcracker in the park and Shakespeare in the Park.
A vital arts scene is essential for the economic well being of St. Pete.
Long term support of arts communities comes from an established base of high wage jobs and profitable businesses. To attempt to build a national class arts community without existence of a large number of high wage earners is dooming it to be forever funded by the public. Also in the scheme of things, this is not the time to spend public $$ on the arts-put a plan in place for a few years from now and implement it when the economy is better.
Support of the for-profit art institutions & art related businesses (not just the non-profits) is essential if you want St. Petersburg to be a true arts community. Goal #4 is most important.
We are moving into a renaissance as we approach 2010 with a transfromation of business overdue at all levels. Art is our future to balance a social society that is increasingly becoming too left-brained, technologically over identified via computers and losing touch with the essence of what has always depicted and inspired civilization as we know it--ART.
Thank you for all your hard work in helping artist. Art helps a community keep our kids off the streets and busy. It also helps their sefl esteem and worth. I just makes St. Petersuburg a happy and positive place to live. Thank you for makine St. Pete and Pinellas County a nice place to live, work or visit. cheryl anne day-swallow
This wish list is too broad. The City can only concentrate on one or two of thee items.
Supporter of the arts in Pinellas Count and St. Pete, Member of Florida Craftsman, Morean Arts Center, Florida Society of Goldsmiths, HAEA and FAEA
Let us use empty buildings to sisplay school art work.
I was a volunteer board member and president of an arts organization and know what arts and culture can do to enhance a city's appeal to tourists and visitors as well as residents. Arts and culture should be an integral part of a city's identity - the city staff can do a lot to facilitate, promote and coordinate while not having to spend a lot of tax dollars.
Mahaffey should hook up with Van Wezel to bring to our area acts which now do not come to Tampa Bay
Good survey
A strong arts and cultural community is a major reason why I have chosen to live here and grow a major business here, and is a key component of recruiting employees and business and investment partners to the area.
Thank you for providing this survey. Arts are as valuable a revenue stream as sports arena/teams. I'm proud to live in a city that boasts the Dali , Moean and MFA.
I was in the "green zone" for most answers. Whoever developed this survey was reading my mind!
Reach out to the private companies! If the tax rate in St Pete was lower I would purchase in St Pete but I cannot afford to buy in St Pete and am looking to purchase elsewhere in the county, so I support private support not more government support!
Retain the best and brightest is a good idea but we must also encourage new new new people to showcase their work too. Same names out there all the time.
Show and promote Florida artist and their work. I live in Orlando.
Some of the best things about our community involve the arts.
Photgraphy projects, historical sites, a way to show our talents.
St. Petersburg's best hope for the future is recognition as an art destination.
Music needs to be included in the "arts" including parades etc
The arts are an absolutely critical factor in making St. Petersburg not only a livable city for its residents, but a well-known and desirable destination for tourists and visitors. Do not underestimate the relationship between the arts and economic development!
I am a professional photographer. www.moormanphoto.com
I chose to live in the area because of the artistic community; I choose travel destinations based on the arts offerings of particular cities. Vibrant communities have strong arts communities.
Keep the Festival of States and encourage local amateur musical ensembles and music in the schools.
Without the arts, we're just another working class slum. Baywalk is an opportunity waiting to go artsit would be the only venue like it in the state.
More of the answers would be 1 if the economy were better; as city finances improve, these will be higher priorities.
Time and again it has been proven how important the arts are to community building and economic stability.
As much as I would like to see the use of our public parks to foster the arts, it is really a noise and parking nuisance. The city should not allow rock concerts to disturb the peace as it recently did with the heavy metal rock concert in Vinoy Park that went on from morning til 10 at night on a Sunday. It was excessive noise.
