Manufacturing is a top employment sector for both St. Petersburg and Pinellas County, as evidenced by the city’s rank as second statewide for manufacturing employment. Manufacturing exports in St. Petersburg total an impressive $843 million annually, contributing to Florida’s rank as the second largest medical device manufacturer in the country.

The growing sector of specialized manufacturing, which employs over 3,100 people in St. Petersburg, can be distinguished by two niches: electronics manufacturing and medical devices manufacturing. Electronics manufacturing ranges from the production of semiconductor machinery to the development of various types of electronic components. Medical device manufacturing involves the creation of medical equipment and supplies. Both niches share the need for a production-oriented labor force, competitive taxation and incentives, and export strategies. St. Petersburg offers specialized manufacturers all of these advantages and more.

The region has several workforce development assets including St. Petersburg College, Pinellas Technical College, and the University of South Florida, as well as FloridaMakes, which provides individualized services to enhance manufacturing companies. Annual wages in specialized manufacturing are higher compared to the city’s average wage and national average by subsector, which helps attract and retain top talent. Additionally, the Bay Area Manufacturers Association keeps local manufacturers competitive in the global market. With a favorable business climate, incentive programs, competitive costs, and right-to-work status, St. Petersburg provides the right environment for successful manufacturing.
