Reverse Trade Show -The city of St. Petersburg will host its 2nd Annual Reverse Trade Show at the Coliseum on Friday, May 6, 2011, from 10:00am until 2:00pm. Public Input for FY12 Budget - The city is facing a $12M shortfall, largely caused by a projected 8% drop in property tax revenue in 2012. Mayor Bill Foster and city leaders strongly encourage residents to prioritize city services at three public budget summits as they consider reductions to the city's proposed FY12 budget. All of the summits will include a brief presentation on the proposed FY12 spending shortfall and begin at 6:00pm. The next summit will take place on May 18, 2011 at the Azalea Center, 1600 72nd Street North. Learn more 

Midday by the Bay Series - Enjoy free lunchtime entertainment every Friday in the beautiful Progress Energy Center for the Arts' Plaza. St. Petersburg Selects BIG 3 - On April 7, 2011, City Council and Mayor Bill Foster chose BIG 3 Entertainment to manage the Mahaffey Theater. BIG 3 was one of three companies to bid on the facilities management contract. Its primary goal is to reduce reliance on city subsidies for the 2,031-seat Mahaffey Theater and it will leverage sister company resources to expand programming at the venue. BIG 3 Entertainment

Ticket Offenders Get the Boot -  Effective on April 15, 2011, vehicles whose owners have at least three outstanding and overdue parking tickets or one overdue disable parking ticket may be booted with an immobilization device until the overdue parking citations are paid. This new policy is part of a series of improvements to make parking in downtown St. Petersburg more accessible, convenient, and fair. Newsroom

A Taste of Pinellas - May 20-22 - The annual A Taste of Pinellas three-day food and music festival will be held at Vinoy Park in downtown St. Petersburg on May 20-22, 2011. A Taste of Pinellas features tastes from top local restaurants, live music from national acts, a family-friendly Kids' Zone, and much more! SP/CL Airport "Most Competitively Priced"

In a recent New York Times article, which ranked "Most Expensive" to "Most Competitively Priced" airports throughout the country based on comparative sized rankings, the St. Petersburg/Clw International Airport took Top Honors as the "Most Competitively Priced" small sized airport in the nation.

Airfare pricing was based on two main factors: the distance traveled and a variable representing the demand for travel at both the origin and destination airports. The complete article is available at NYT online

USF-SP MBA Program Open House

The MBA program at USF-SP is designed to prepare graduates for socially responsible business leadership in the global environment of the 21st Century. The AACSB-accredited program ranks 36th in Beyond Grey Pinstripes in the global 100 list for preparing students for leadership roles with an appreciation of sustainability and environmental and social stewardship.

The MBA program at USFSP is the only one in Florida that offers a series of MBA Essentials, an intensive program designed for students without a recent undergraduate degree in business and is available under a full-time, part-time, or global course curriculum.

It's next informational open house will be held on May 17, 2011 from 5:30pm - 6:30pm in room 2-304 at the Pinellas County EpiCenter, located at 13805 58th Street North, Clearwater.

PSTA Chooses Miller as Director

Bradford J. Miller, transit chief in Des Moines, Iowa, was selected on Friday, April 15, 2011 by the Pinellas County Transit Authority (PSTA) board to operate its transit system. Mr. Miller was the top candidate out of three finalists and was a former transit manager in Charlotte, NC. Seven out of 10 board members ranked Miller as their top choice.

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) is the public transit provider in Pinellas County, Florida, providing more than 13.1 million passenger trips in 2010. 205 buses serve 5,159 bus stops on 37 routes in Pinellas County. Miller is slated to begin in July 2011. PSTA online ■

SBA Issues Disaster Loan Declaration

On April 8, 2011, the Small business Administration (SBA) issued a disaster loan declaration for Pinellas and surrounding counties impacted by the March 31 tornado outbreak.

Under this declaration, qualified businesses may be eligible for business disaster loans to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate or property. SBA can also lend additional funds to businesses to help with the cost of making improvements that protect, prevent or minimize the same type of disaster damage from occurring in the future.

Loan applications can be filed until the close of business on June 6, 2011, and economic injury applications can be filed until the close of business on January 9, 2012. Learn more

All Children's Hospital Joins Johns Hopkins Medicine

On April 1, 2011, All Children's Hospital officially became part of the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS), as a fully integrated member of Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM). This unison makes All Children's the first U.S. hospital outside of the Baltimore/Washington DC region to achieve membership within JHM, which includes the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System.

The transaction involved no cash, no purchase, or sale between the organizations. Under the terms of the integration agreement, All Children's Hospital (ACH) retains its name and its longstanding commitment to the children of Florida. Donations made to the Hospital's Foundation remain for the benefit of All Children's. Leadership and day-to-day operation of the 259-bed freestanding pediatric hospital in St. Petersburg and outreach facilities in eight west Florida counties are not expected to change.

All Children's will retain its voluntary medical staff and physician organizations, including those University of South Florida physicians practicing at ACH. The University and All Children's are committed to continuing the USF Residency Program at ACH through 2014, with the possibility of extending beyond that timeframe still under discussion. Read More

Raymond James Completes Acquisition

On April 1, 2011, Raymond James Financial, Inc. announced the completion of its acquisition of Howe Barnes Hoefer & Arnett, Inc., resulting in the addition of private wealth management servicing to more than 5,000 clients, representing more than $1,7B in assets under management.

The Howe Barnes acquisition extends Raymond James’ capital markets reach within the financial institutions segment, specifically community and regional banks and thrifts, including equity research, sales, trading and investment banking resources, and services.

In addition, on April 20, 2011, Raymond James Financial reported a 45% increase from the prior year’s quarterly net income to $80,917,000, for its second fiscal quarter ended March 31, 2011. "This quarter’s record net revenue, assets under administration and assets under management demonstrate the underlying strength of the firm through this economic recovery,” stated CEO Paul Reilly.

Morean Arts Center Gets New Talent

On April 13, 2011, the Morean Arts Center announced four new senior management additions to the Center. The additions included the following persons and their respective roles: Maria Emilia, director of programming; Wayne David Atherholt, director of marketing/communications; Sarah Knott, marketing manager; and Roger Ross, chief financial officer.

The Morean Arts Center is a marquee component of the growing St. Petersburg arts cluster. This addition of extremely talented and  focused staff and it's dedication to continued artistic growth and serving the needs of the community only reinforces that role.

Edward White Launches Amputee Program

On Friday, April 29, 2011, from Noon - 1:30pm Edward White Hospital and A Step Ahead for Amputees, the bay area's first comprehensive program with an action-oriented support group for amputees and those facing limb-loss, will hold an information kick-off event for the program at the hospital, located at 2299 - 9th Ave. N. Suite 1-G, St. Petersburg (auditorium east side of the hospital).

The event will feature an overview of the A Step Ahead for Amputees program by its founder, Jamie Kay Weil, and remarks by Sheri Gruden, an amputee and A Step Ahead for Amputees participant, along with Roland Metivier, CEO of Edward White Hospital.

LumaStream's Canadian Expansion

On April 18, 2011, LumaStream, announced it was expanding to Canada through its acquisition of Power Vector, a division of E-Craftsmen, and has formed a new subsidiary company titled LumaStream Canada ULC.

LumaStream is one of the fastest growing Solid-State lighting solutions providers in the U.S. and is headquartered in St. Petersburg, FL. Through its LumaStream Canada ULC division, its products feature a 3-in-1 approach to lighting that combines power, a dimming interface, and an LED current driver channeled into one cohesive system for low voltage DC power distribution.

The Canadian expansion is foreseen to accelerate its ability to achieve tremendous growth in Solid-State lighting. LumaStream currently has 21 employees with international sales and expects to scale rapidly with job growth due to the acquisition expansion. Read More

Chihuly Collection Welcomes 100,000 Visitor

The Chihuly Collection, which opened in July 2010, welcomed its 100,000 visitor on April 7, 2011. The 100,000 visitor was from Ann Arbor, Michigan and its been estimated that approximately 60% of all the Collection's guests are from outside Pinellas County.

The expectation exceeding attendance at the Chihuly Collection is another example of why St. Petersburg has earned a reputation as the premier arts and cultural destination in the state.

The Chihuly Collection provides an up-close and personal experience due the way the art and the facility's architecture work together, an environment not replicated in any art realm in the U.S. To enrich the experience, visitors can go to the Morean Arts Center Glass Studio & Hot Shop to watch glassblowers create one-of-a-kind pieces. The Morean Arts Center owns and operates the Chihuly Collection.

Job Corps Advisory Council

In October 2010, the U.S. Department of Labor Job Corps of Pinellas County, which is located in St. Petersburg, opened its doors to provide skill-set education to at-risk young adults ages 16-24. Its curriculum is designed to engage with local employers to determine and fulfill worker placement needs within the community.

The Job Corps program is currently seeking interested individuals from the healthcare industry or the construction industry to participate in their industry-specific Advisory Council.

To keep the vocational training current and responsive to community needs, the Advisory Council, which is made up of local individuals from various industry trades, is utilized to guide curriculum development, provide learning opportunities for the students, and possibly foster placement opportunities for graduates. The St. Petersburg Times released its annual Top Work Places with 70 companies making the list, by 25,000 bay area employees voting for their companies' best work practices which makes them tops.

ONE BAY Regional Health Assessment

Just released by the Tampa Bay Partnership Regional Research & Education Foundation, is the region's first "Regional Health Assessment."

This comprehensive report provides a benchmark for the health of the eight county region, as compared to state and national levels, and pinpoints where the region meets or exceeds targets.

Data was collected for 60 indicators in five areas: economy/demographics, health outcomes, health-related behavior, health systems and access, and environmental health.

Beyond the Horizon: Gulf of Mexico

Beyond the Horizon, May 11-13, 2011 at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, is a conference based on the discussion of identifying a potential network of special ocean places to help strengthen the ecology, economy, and culture of the Gulf of Mexico.

The goal is to build consensus for establishing ecologically significant protections for key Gulf of Mexico sites to ensure that they continue to provide important services to our society and to identify the mechanisms that allow comprehensive approaches to management and allow for the significant involvement of the public in decision making. Mote Marine Laboratory is a service agency partner with the St. Petersburg Ocean Team. The St. Petersburg Ocean Team (SPOT) was a valuable asset during the Deep Horizon Gulf of Mexico oil spill and continues to monitor the ongoing impacts of the environment disaster.

SPOT represents the premier consortium for marine science, oceanographic, and environmental research agencies and institutions in the Southeast and is one of the top such industry clusters in the nation.

Maddux Report NEW Online Service

During the month of April, Maddux a reputable regional business reporting publication, launched its new Maddux Report service. This online application is designed to be an information service to real estate brokers, owners, managers, appraisers, lenders, developers, and investors.
