Gazelle Labs Hosts Global Entrepreneurship Week

During Global Entrepreneurship Week, November 14-20, Gazelle Labs will showcase a full spectrum of the city's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

On Thursday, November 17, Gazelle Lab will host its inaugural Demo Day at the Mahaffey Theater. At this event, six high-growth start-ups will pitch to global investors for the chance to raise capital for their technologies. St. Petersburg's Gazelle Lab program, established in 2011, has already created 14 jobs and raised over $100,000 direct investment.

On Friday, November 18th, the St. Petersburg Chamber, Creative Pinellas, and local startup Kngroo will offer guests of Gazelle Lab Demo Day a scavenger hunt in downtown St. Petersburg. This fun, interactive event will connect local retailers and arts and social entrepreneurs through technology.

Finally, Shopapalooza, a one-day shopping extravaganza will be held on The Pier on Saturday, November 19th from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. This pre "black Friday" event highlights local retailers. Find great deals, entertainment, door prizes and more!

$4.8M Federal Grant Received by WorkNet Pinellas

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a $4.8M grant to WorkNet Pinellas to help with job creation.

WorkNet's Tampa Bay Alliance Healthcare (TBAH) Program will boost its technical skills training program and certify approximately 600 persons in the field of healthcare. This co-op program is made possible through the efforts of WorkNet Pinellas, Tampa Bay WorkForce Alliance, St. Petersburg College, and BayCare Health Systems.

Signature Place Sells Out Retail and Office Space

This month marked a milestone for the mixed-use development, Signature Place. Its 56,000 SF of ground floor retail and office space was officially sold out, with sales handled by Colliers International Tampa Bay.

Most of the Class A space ranged from 1,000 to 8,000 SF, with a tenant mix of buyers including: Z Grille restaurant, Fifth Third Bank, Bull Fitness, Wee Gallery, Graphic Arts Studio, and  the Mahaffey Company.

John Collins to Lead St. Petersburg Arts Alliance

On October 10th, City Council and Mayor Bill Foster unanimously selected John Collins to organize and lead the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance, a new arts and culture initiative.

The Arts Alliance will be charged with launching the St. Petersburg Endowment for the Arts, a dedicated funding stream created to supplement the city's existing arts grants budget allocation.

Collins is a seasoned arts professional, with over 37 years of expertise in providing leadership assistance to arts and education non-profit organizations across the U.S. to attain goals of financial stability and growth.

The Arts, Culture, Tourism and Events cluster is one of six business clusters that flourishes in the city. It represents a geographical concentration and inner connectivity of the arts for job growth and an economic impact of $23.3M.

New 49,639 SF Publix Opens in St. Petersburg

On October 14th, Publix Supermarkets opened a new store in St. Petersburg. The 49,639 SF store replaces one of the oldest in the chain's inventory and expands its footprint by 10,000 SF.

The property's layout along the 34th Street Corridor was redesigned to meet current Land Development Regulations (LDRs) with a Bungalow Style facade and pedestrian-friendly landscape setback.

Surprising St. Pete Marketing Campaign Launched

St. Petersburg launched a new look on the web, www.SurprisingStPete.com

Working with a local advertising agency, the city is emphasizing its WOW factor, by exhibiting its 24/7 downtown, great nightlife, world class museums, Tampa Bay Rays MLB, Honda Grand Prix, the third largest waterfront park system in North America, and its 83,000 friends on Facebook.

Transportation

New Meter Rates Downtown:  $1.00 per hour rate change took effect this month. Parking meter revenue is used to maintain downtown's parking program, garages, and infrastructure. Learn More

Remember, the city's new Stop on Red program is ending its trial period. Beginning on October 29th tickets will be issued to red light runners at camera intersections.

Award Honors

100 Best Community for Young People: St. Petersburg has earned the honor from America's Promise Alliance, for the fifth time. As a model for other communities across the nation, the city provides great community programs and recreational assets for the youth.

St. Pete Taco Bus "Outstanding Business of the Year": The State's Florida Main Street program announced its 2011 Awards, which encourages and acknowledges local Main Street Program accomplishments. The St. Pete Taco Bus, located on the historic avenue of Grand Central in St. Petersburg, earned one of 30 honor/merit awards presented.

Advertising: "How to Make it Work for You" is being offered on November 3rd from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. This intermediate level class is offered quarterly, act now just in time for the New Year. Learn More

The city's Business Assistance Center offers courses, a computer lab, and resource materials to help grow small business.

Communities Putting Prevention to Work grant is surveying the community to collect data on the usage of the parks in Pinellas County. The more that participate the better the data for future planning. SurveyMonkey

Best of St. Pete/CLW Competition: The Visit St. Petersburg Clearwater CVB has launched an online competition for the public to vote for their favorites in 20 categories. Voting will be open through October 31st with winners announced in January 2012.

 


Highlights from Mayor Foster City Events Calendar
Live at the Manhattan Casino is a street festival offering three days of jazz, soul, and gospel nostalgia at the historic Manhattan Casino in Midtown. It will take place the weekend of October 28-30, along a designated Main Street of the city, located at 642 22nd Street South. Learn More

Mayor's Night Out will be held on Thursday, November 3rd, beginning at 7:00 pm at Gladden Park Recreation Center, 3901 30th Avenue North. This is the last event for 2011, which offers the opportunity for a one-on-one conversation with the mayor and city staff. StPete.org

Dollars for Doorways Benefit Concert with Martina McBride will take place on Saturday, November 5th, beginning at 8:00 pm in Demens Landing. Ticket sales benefit the Mayor's Mentors & More youth scholarship program. Tickets are on sale at the Mahaffey Theater box office or through Ticketmaster.
