For four days in March, the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg turns the streets of downtown into a heated race track for Indy. This year's race heats up city streets March 23-25, kicking things off with the Honda Grand Prix's Festival of States Illuminated Night Parade on March 22.
The marquee race for the 2012 IZOD IndyCar series, the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will pay tribute to city resident and two-time Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon, who won St. Petersburg's 2005 entrance into open-wheel racing. This year's event also marks the debut of a new IndyCar chassis, manufactured by Dallara Automobili, and tested by Wheldon during 2011. The new chassis, named 'DW12' after the racer, features a stylish, more adaptable design for open-wheel racing, while providing a safer driving experience.
A series of races along a picturesque waterfront include 14 turns and a 1.8 mile temporary track. Features include: Indycar, Indy Lights, and drifting exhibitions plus the Bright House Speed Zone, live music, driver autograph sessions, celebrity sightings and more!
The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg has been racing on downtown streets since 2005, with a commitment through 2014.
150,000 fans attended the 2011 race - breaking attendance records for the prior two years hosted in downtown St. Petersburg.
