Public Education - Fire Safety Programs

Remember: Be Smart, Don't Let A Fire Start

The fire safety programs in 2006 were very successful. 339 programs touched the lives of over 54,000 citizens, with presentations for the general public and those targeting the very young, the senior citizen community, and the economically challenged. Statistics indicate that these segments of the community are most impacted by fire-related incidents.

Some of the accomplishments of which we are most proud of are the Fire Station 15 exhibit at the Great Explorations, The Childrens Museum, which opened June of 2006. We continue to support the fire safety exhibits located at the Main Library and the Science Center. All three of these displays encourage the participation of children in several interactive safety scenarios. Fire Station 15 and Fire Station 14 at the Science Center provide static displays as well as interactive video presentations. At the Main Library, there are over 400 children's books in the Fire Safety Corner. Fire Station 14, located in the Science Center, provides static displays as well as interactive video presentations. The fire safety programs are funded primarily through the Prevention budget with some additional monies from grants.

The Prevention Division coordinates a home safety program entitled Project Home Safety and Fire Education (S.A.F.E.), directed by Public Education. This program educates the occupants of one- and two-family dwellings regarding community-related home safety issues, such as pool safety and drowning prevention, fall prevention, and fire safety. We generate interest in the program by offering free smoke alarms and replacement smoke alarm batteries. This incentive entices city residents to call our office for involvement in the program. In 2006, we provided installation assistance for 930 smoke alarms within 442 homes. Funding for this program is derived from grants, donations from fraternal organizations, and the Prevention budget. The smoke alarm installation and home safety survey is performed by our Fire Operations Division, re-enforcing the concept that fire safety is the responsibility of every member SPFR.
