Some facts about the city's fleet:

Green City

Thursday, at the St. Petersburg City Council Meeting (watch ), St. Petersburg was designated as the first – and only – city in the state to become a “Green City” by the Florida Green Building Coalition. main_arrow 360 police cruisers, each equipped with a light bar, a barrier cage between the officer and rear seat, a shotgun rack and an onboard computer station.

main_arrow 13 ambulances with anti-bacterial, seamless floors and special cushions to protect both patients and rescue workers from blood-borne pathogens. The new, larger heavy duty vehicles cost $140,000 each.

main_arrow 3 city-owned Daihatsu mini-ambulances used by the city for its many special events. Their compact size allow for them to maneuver through crowded areas, yet provide full service for patients and rescue workers.

main_arrow With rising fuel costs, the fleet now includes Ford Escape electric/gas hybrid SUVs.  
  
main_arrow Other specialty vehicles include trucks that paint lines on roads, huge vacuum trucks that clean sewers and storm drains and 16-foot wide mowers.

main_arrow In addition to moving vehicles, equipment in the Fleet inventory includes portable bleachers and the Showmobile, a mobile outdoor stage.

main_arrow The largest piece of equipment is a 100-foot aerial ladder truck, which costs $625,000; the smallest is a $250 chain saw.

main_arrowThe total value of the fleet is approximately $76.7 million.
Vehicles are generally considered for replacement after eight years and  between 80,000 and 100,000 miles.

main_arrow 30 mechanics are employed to service and repair the fleet, Monday through Saturday. Emergency service and towing is available 24/7.

main_arrow Last fiscal year, the fleet consumed 1.96 million gallons of fuel.

A local landmark, the "Security Lizard," sits atop the Fleet Management building. This public arts sculpture, created by Paul Eppling, is created from car bumpers, glass, street lights, traffic signals, license plates and other auto parts. The lizard has a firefly in its mouth (a street light), which provides security lighting for the facility.
