The City of St. Petersburg's Historic and Archaeological Preservation Overlay Ordinance, established in 1986, provides a process for the local designation of individual resources, districts, and archaeological sites (City Code 16.30.060.) Nominations for local landmark status can be initiated by the property owner, any resident of St. Petersburg or any organization in St. Petersburg including the City.
Identifying and designating properties of major significance encourages the preservation and protection of St. Petersburg's important historic, architectural, and archeological resources. The City of St. Petersburg's Historic and Archaeological Preservation Overlay Ordinance, established in 1986, provides a process by which individual resources, districts, and archaeological sites can be recognized (City Code 16.30.060.) Within the City of St. Petersburg, there are over 80 designated buildings, structures, districts, and sites. These resources include private residences, commercial buildings, churches, municipal buildings, water towers, and airport hangars as well as cemeteries and archaeological sites.
