As property owners make repairs to storm-damaged structures, the city of St. Petersburg reminds residential and commercial property owners to obtain the proper permits and to use licensed contractors.

Generally, indoor and outdoor construction work requires a permit when it is major and substantial, including adding to an existing building or its existing electrical, plumbing and/or mechanical components. Work which does not require a permit includes minor repair including cosmetic and finishing work. A list of work exempt from permit requirements is available at http://www.stpete.org/PermitInfo.htm.
If there is an urgent need to protect property from additional damage - such as covering roof or window openings - please don't delay in making any temporary repairs necessary. Permanent repair and replacement work must comply with zoning and FEMA requirements; these regulations will be addressed in the construction permitting process.
The construction industry is also regulated by state and county agencies who require a license for most types of work. Licensed construction companies have insurance and should be familiar with both the technical and procedures requirements for their industry such as which types of work require permits. Licensed contractors are required to be used for work on commercial properties and some work at single family properties.
