HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR TAKAMATSU STUDENT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM3
ST. PETERSBURG, FL (June 25, 2015) – The application deadline is Friday, July 3, for St. Petersburg families interested in sharing their home and culture as a host family with a visiting exchange student from Takamatsu, Japan, this summer. Families of current and previous applicants and ambassadors are encouraged to participate. Information on the Student Ambassador Host Family program, including an application, is available at www.stpete.org/hostfamily or through the Office of Cultural Affairs, 727-892-5370.
St. Petersburg welcomes three Takamatsu student ambassadors, two females and one male, as part of the sister cities’ annual exchange for nine days beginning July 21. Host families are encouraged to include their Japanese guest in their daily activities, as well as special visits to St. Petersburg’s museums, the beach, theme parks and shopping malls. During their stay, all three student ambassadors and their host families will attend a City Council meeting and participate in a cultural meet-and-greet.
St. Petersburg’s Student Ambassador program, administered by the city’s International Relations Committee, also selects two St. Petersburg high school students to visit Takamatsu for two weeks each summer in a cultural exchange. This year, St. Petersburg’s student ambassadors, Catalina Small and Jessica Baugher, both juniors at St. Petersburg Collegiate High School, depart for Takamatsu July 6.
St. Petersburg, believed to have one of the longest continuous relationships in the Sister City organization, formalized its relationship with Takamatsu in 1961. City officials marked the 50th anniversary of the Sister City relationship in 2011 with official delegations to both cities. Following those visits, a Sister Schools relationship was created for students at Perkins Elementary, who have participated in a virtual Bonsai Exchange with students attending Kinashi Elementary in Takamatsu, since 2012.
