SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival: Shining Bright at the Historic Royal Theater

Shining bright in the Deuces Live District, the SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival will partner with the Boys & Girls Club at the Royal Theater to produce a mural on the side of the historic Quonset hut. Designed in collaboration with the surrounding community, local artist Brian McAllister and students from the Gibbs Mural Club will paint alongside participants of the Boys & Girls Club program. Built in 1948 to serve as one of the only movie theaters for African Americans during the days of segregation, the historic Royal Theater still operates as a social and cultural landmark.

The wall, which stretches 134 feet long, will showcase an artistic history of the building beginning with its origin as a movie theater and culminating in its current function as an arts-based afterschool program for local youth. The Boys and Girls Club tagline “Great Futures Start Here” will serve as an anchor for the artwork. “We are excited to partner with the Shine Mural Festival, Brian McAllister and the Gibbs Mural Club to create an inspiring mural on the exterior of our Royal Theater Club. With Brian’s talent, we were able to create a true illustration of the Royal Theater past and present. I am sure Brian’s work will inspire all of our Club members to strive toward their great future. We can’t wait to see the completed piece,” said Royal Theater Club Director Eldon Hollomon.

The Deuces Live District is an area already rich with murals by local artists. “SHINE murals bring foot traffic; encouraging viewers to spend time in areas they may not have otherwise explored. The Royal Theater project is a great opportunity to encourage residents and visitors alike to look beyond Central Avenue,” said Shine Director Jenee Priebe.

Look for the Royal Theater on the 2019 Shine map. All 21 new SHINE murals will be painted October 18-26, 2019.
