St. Petersburg's Oldest Golf Course Reopens After Major Renovation
ST. PETERSBURG, FL (November 2, 2015) – This Friday, November 6,the city of St. Petersburg welcomes golfers back to Twin Brooks Golf Course, 3800 22nd Avenue South, following a $1.5 million, six month golf course renovation. The new course offers larger, manicured platinum Paspalum greens, an expanded, covered, 18-station driving range tee and target greens downrange, as well as a three-hole practice course and two practice greens.
Beginning Friday, golfers will hit the links on a 9-hole, par 3 course, which offers 1,068 yards in length with putting surfaces averaging more than 3,500 square feet, much larger than the former 18-hole, par 3 course. The newly renovated course also offers golfers a 7,000 square foot platinum Paspalum putting green. The course includes undulating mounds, added to simulate play on a regulation course, a hidden manmade lake adjacent to three holes, and scenic views of Clam Bayou and the Pinellas Trail, all accessible by 12 new electric golf cars or on foot.
“The goal was to create a more open course that is playable and enjoyable for golfers of all levels, with quality putting surfaces, for a great value. An improved practice area, along with a covered driving range tee will make for one of the finest practice facilities in Pinellas County,” said Jeff Hollis, St. Petersburg Golf Courses Director. “This renovation has made dramatic improvements to Twin Brooks and provides a win-win for the community, The First Tee and golfers in St. Petersburg.”
The project also improved upon drainage at Twin Brooks by implementing a sub-surface drainage system, which will help move water from the turf and allow the course to reopen sooner after heavier rains.
Directly south of the parking lot, three practice holes and two practice greens make a perfect setting for the more than 1,400 participants of The First Tee of St. Petersburg youth development program to practice their golf game, and accompanying life skills, as they learn the value of respect, sportsmanship, judgment, honesty, perseverance, integrity, confidence, courtesy and responsibility, which make up the Nine Core Values of The First Tee. These practice facilities will also be available to adult golfers at various times during the year for a fee. Future plans for The First Tee of St. Petersburg include building a youth mentoring center at Twin Brooks, where participants may do homework, have access to a computer lab, and mentoring. Groundbreaking for the mentoring center is tentatively scheduled for spring 2016.
Said Mayor Rick Kriseman: “Twin Brooks will be a special place in St. Petersburg, where, through the First Tee program, young people can come and learn life skills, leadership, and the game of golf. Twin Brooks represents the best of what we can do when we work together in the Sunshine City.”
This is the first major renovation to the golf course since coming under city ownership more than 40 years ago; in 1992, tees, greens and the driving range were upgraded and a clubhouse, now the pro shop, was added in 1993. Grand opening ceremonies and a ribbon cutting to dedicate the renovated course are scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, November 21, at Twin Brooks.
