Resurfacing and Grand Prix preps force detours downtown
St. Petersburg, Fla. (February 22, 2018) – Pavement resurfacing work along First Street South and Central Avenue -- as well as construction of the Grand Prix raceway through the downtown area -- will cause some closures and detours over the next few days.
On Thursday, February 22, 2018, milling of the existing roadway along First Street (from First Avenue North through First Avenue South) will force closure of the southbound lanes to traffic. Northbound lanes through the area will remain open from First Avenue South to First Avenue North. Milling work will also take place along Central Avenue between First and Second Streets through the afternoon. It is expected that the roadway will be open starting at 5 pm to handle rush-hour traffic.
Due to the closure of First Street South from First Avenue South through Fifth Avenue South for Grand Prix preparations, the posted detours will take through traffic west to Second Avenue at First Street North and continue south on Second to Fifth Avenue South.
On Friday, February 23, 2018, crews will begin the paving process on First Street and also along Central Avenue. During that operation, traffic will be detoured as well. The same detour route will be used Friday.
Roadway marking will take place Saturday morning in this area, and the roadways should be fully opened by mid-day. It should be noted that despite the traffic modifications, all area shops and restaurants will be "open for business."
The staff and crews of the St. Petersburg Public Works Department Engineering and Capital Improvements appreciate everyone's patience during this time.
