Small Amount of Waste Sludge leaks at construction site

St. Petersburg, Fla.  (April 27, 2018) – A small amount of sludge (a solid byproduct of the Water Reclamation Process) was spilled at the Southwest Water Reclamation Facility at 3800 54th Avenue South.

Approximately 1800 gallons of the sludge leaked from a temporary pipeline (that was partially dismantled due to construction) before crews could stop the flow between 7 and 8 am Friday.  Some 1500 gallons of the material was vacuumed and removed from the ground areas immediately adjacent to the spill by a Vactor truck crew.  However, an additional 300 gallons was swept and hosed into a treatment plant drain system.  The line has been secured and the main valve for the line has been closed to prevent any further discharge.

There was no release of any materials past the containment area.  No nearby waterways were impacted in any way.
