Downtown water main replacement begins

St. Petersburg, Fla.  (July 9, 2018) -- Installation of new water mains underway downtown.  A one-block area of Central Avenue between Second and Third Streets has already been closed as crews begin their excavation efforts.

The construction work is scheduled to continue through January, 2019 in the following construction areas:

·         Central Avenue from Third Street to Beach Drive NE

·         First Avenue North from Third Street North to Second Street North

·         First Avenue North from Second Street North to First Avenue North

·         First Street North from Central Avenue to First Avenue North

The replacement of aged and undersized water mains through the above-listed locations will also allow crews to place 4” conduit which will be used for fiber optic connections at The New St. Pete Pier™ at a later date.  There will also be directional (underground) boring of a 2’ conduit from First Street S to Beach Drive NE along First Avenue NE and also from First Avenue NE & Beach Drive NE intersection to Bay Shore Drive NE & Second Avenue NE intersection (with diagonal directional boring under South Straub Park).

The construction cost is $1,684,137.50

The contractor, Rowland, Inc., will notify property owners and businesses seven to ten days in advance of work beginning in their immediate vicinity.  They have been directed to make every effort to minimize any inconvenience experienced throughout the construction phase.  Local access to businesses and residents will be maintained at all times.

The city will provide a full-time construction inspector to answer questions or address concerns in the field.  Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding during this construction process.
