Benjamin F. Shirley
Director, Sanitation Department

Ben Shirley has been employed by the Sanitation Department since 1970. After holding several positions of increasing responsibility he was appointed director in 2006. His efforts have helped make St. Petersburg’s Sanitation Department one of the most modern and efficient solid waste operations in the world. Mr. Shirley oversees the activities of the 210 employees who collect and dispose of the City’s more than 300,000 tons of solid waste each year.

A graduate of Carter Parramore High School in Quincy, Florida, Ben has been certified in numerous management programs including “Leadership in a World of Difference” and “Leadership St. Pete.”

Ben has served on the boards of the Pinellas County Cooperative Extension Service and the Louise Graham Center. He is an active participant and member of the American Public Works Association, the Community Awareness and Response Team, the Solid Waste Association of North America, and the National Forum for Black Public Administrators. He has received honors from Florida Power (Progress Energy), PARC and numerous citizens’ associations for his outstanding and continuous service and dedication to his community.
