St. Pete's Promise is a multi-faceted initiative aimed at turning students at-risk in St. Petersburg into students with promise, by providing our community with opportunities to invest in our schools, our teachers, and our children. Born from the groundbreaking Mayor's Mentors and More Program, through St. Pete's Promise the City of St. Petersburg has stepped outside the traditional role of city government to partner with the Pinellas Education Foundation and Pinellas County Schools to invest in improving the quality of education.
Aligned with the America's Promise Alliance, this St. Petersburg program was recognized recently by Colin Powell as the most successful community-based program to improve graduation rates in the United States. St. Pete's Promise includes: recruiting and training mentors from our city; raising funds for college scholarships for low-income students; advocating for community support of our schools and teachers; providing grants for our outstanding teachers; and building close working relationships with Pinellas County Schools and our community partners.
Contributing to St. Pete's Promise pays big dividends for the children of St. Petersburg. For $6,000, we have the opportunity to help the children of low-income earning families in St. Petersburg increase their lifetime incomes by more than 100%! That is because those with college degrees earn an average of $1 million more during their careers than those with only a high school diploma (US Census Bureau). That is what the Take Stock in Children Scholarship Program and St. Pete's Promise do for these children. Every $6,000 we raise is matched by the Pinellas Education Foundation and the State of Florida, placing a college education within the reach of deserving children in St. Petersburg.
Please consider this opportunity to make a difference in the life of a St. Petersburg student; it's our future too, and every dollar we raise makes a huge difference.

In January 2010 the City of St. Petersburg in partnership with Pinellas County Schools and with funding from America's Promise Alliance presented Operation Graduation: Empowered, Engaged, Involved; a day-long community summit with a single purpose -- to find a way to increase the high school graduation rate in our community. From this summit, a community action plan was formulated proposing a 2% annual increase in the number of students graduating from high school, on time and ready for college or the workforce. Over a 5-year period, we look to raise our graduation rate nearly 10% -- from 76% to 86%.
