Volunteer Opportunities

ICAN "Involved Citizens Active in Neighborhoods"

Finding volunteer opportunities is not always easy. The "Involved Citizens Active in Neighborhoods" (I CAN) program is a working partnership with city departments and local nonprofit organizations to develop a one-stop-shop for residents interesting in volunteering. I CAN promotes St. Petersburg city initiatives while also enabling residents to access a wide range of additional opportunities from community partners. The first section of the I CAN website enables residents and organizations to establish a common connection with the city's Community Services Department. A second section encourages organizations to post volunteer opportunities for residents to search and view.

Citizen involvement and volunteer service is important to our city and continues to be an increasing need as resources become even more limited. The I CAN program allows the community to focus its efforts based on priorities and needs assessment. An Advisory Council, comprised of a representative body of our city's departments, institutions, and stakeholders with service as a key focus participates as part of the Community Service and Volunteer Engagement Plan and also gives direction for the I CAN Initiative. The Community Service and Volunteer Engagement Plan focuses on Education, Neighborhood Development, Environmental Conservation and Green Initiatives throughout the city.

Each year, volunteers demonstrate how much St. Petersburg cares! More than 1,302 volunteers and 43 groups -- St. Petersburg residents, business owners, the faith-based community and neighborhood groups -- completed more than 71 projects last September. Contributions from 19 sponsors ensured the day was a huge success! For 10 years, St. Petersburg earned the City of Compassion Care Cup trophy, presented by Somebody Cares Tampa Bay, for having the most volunteers participate. Under the umbrella of CareFest USA, the annual event is usually held the fourth Saturday in September across the nation.
