Mangrove Bayou

Mangrove Bayou Neighborhood Association is a residential community with both waterfront and non- waterfront homes located south of 62nd Avenue NE and Tampa Bay. It was a mid-1960s infill area, and most of its homes were constructed in the late '60s and early '70s. Originally homes sold for between $20,000 and $30,000; in 2004 waterfront homes sell for more than $500,000 and non-waterfront homes sell between $140,000 and $300,000.

Boundaries:

Mangrove Bayou Neighborhood Association's northern boundary is 62nd Avenue NE; its eastern boundary is Tampa Bay; its southern boundary is the intersection of Bayou Grande Boulevard NE and Venetian Boulevard NE and its western boundary is Venetian Boulevard NE and Denver Street NE, north to where they meet Bayou Grande Boulevard NE.

This residential community of 121 single family homes has 42 waterfront homes and 79 non-waterfront homes. The major entry street is 62nd Avenue NE, which ends at Mangrove Bayou Neighborhood Association. Mangrove Bayou Neighborhood Association is strictly a residential neighborhood with no businesses or retail establishments located within its boundaries.

History of the Neighborhood Association:

Mangrove Bayou Neighborhood Association was founded in April 2003. By June 2004 there were 51 members of the association - over 42% of the residents. The major challenge of this neighborhood has been traffic calming on both Venetian Boulevard NE and Bayou Grande Boulevard NE. The City installed three speed humps using the Cost/Benefit Ratio concept in March 2004.

In 2003 the association applied for and received a Neighborhood Partnership Grant through the City of St. Petersburg to install 63 crape myrtles along both Venetian Boulevard NE and Bayou Grande Boulevard NE. They were installed in April of 2004. The association is planning to apply for another Neighborhood Partnership Grant for more crape myrtles for 2005.

The association's calendar is always crowded. Besides producing and hand-delivering newsletters to each household every other month, we hold two annual garage sales, quarterly neighborhood cleanup and recycle Saturdays, a Spring social, annual holiday house decorating contest, and participate in CONA.
