CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON CHILDS PARK YMCA
St. Petersburg, Fla. (January 29, 2008) – The city of St Petersburg and the YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg hosted groundbreaking ceremonies today for the new Childs Park YMCA and a city micro library, to be built at 691 43rd St. S.
The 15,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility will serve as a community center, offering programs for youth and adults. In addition to Y-Achievers, an academic after-school program available to students Kindergarten through eighth grade, the new facility features a new city micro public library, with 1,200 sq. ft. to house a computer lab and a small collection of popular magazines and books. The building will also offer office space for the Childs Park Junior Rattlers football league.
“In September 2006, when the city began the strategic process for the Childs Park area, we found that the highest percentage of young people in Pinellas County is right here in Childs Park,” said Deputy Mayor Goliath J. Davis, III. “We also found that a number of youth-related service providers are already operating along 43rd Street -- including an athletic complex, the Childs Park Junior Rattlers football league, a city recreation center and Playcamp, and Everyone’s Youth United organization,” he added.
“Today’s milestone to break ground on this unique facility is the result of the community meeting process that began in September 2006. We are pleased to be a part of this great collaborative effort involving the YMCA, Rattlers, Everyone’s Youth United, neighborhood associations, city officials and recreation staff over the last 16 months,” said Mayor Rick Baker.
Childs Park is an area defined from Second Ave. N. to 31st Ave. S. between 34th and 49th streets.
