ANOTHER FIVE YEARS OF RACING FOR GRAND PRIX
St. Petersburg, Fla. (April 6, 2008) – As the 2008 Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg race weekend continues today, the City of St. Petersburg, Indy Racing League, American Le Mans Series, Andretti Green Promotions, Honda and Acura announced their intentions to extend the agreement to host another five years of racing of the popular street race. With this announcement, the Grand Prix’s contract would run through 2013, subject to the approval of City Council.
“The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg has emerged as the city’s signature weekend event. As another great day of racing begins today, we are looking forward to many more years to come,” said Mayor Rick Baker.
Kevin Savoree, manager director, Andretti Green Promotions, said, “Since the inception of this event, our success has been largely due to the cooperative partnership AGP enjoys with the City of St. Petersburg, American Honda, the IndyCar Series and the American Le Mans Series. We had a very big vision for this event when we first presented it to the city in 2004, and to be able to announce this agreement today is not only a milestone for our organization, but a great day for the racing fans in the St. Petersburg area.”
Since the inaugural event in 2005, the Grand Prix has continued to grow. The 2007 race drew an estimated 125,000 race fans. This year’s race features two international races, televised on ABC, ESPN and other foreign broadcasting networks.
This weekend, an international field of elite race car drivers will compete on a challenging downtown 1.8 mile, 14-turn race circuit that winds along St. Petersburg’s downtown waterfront. The city’s backdrop for world-class racing events has earned it positive comparisons that of Monte Carlo.
