CITY BEAUTIFUL AWARDS ANNOUNCED
WITH NEW HOME OF THE YEAR AWARD

St. Petersburg, Fla. (October 17, 2007) - Mayor Rick Baker joined the winners of the City Beautiful Commission’s Annual Beautification Awards during a ceremony held Tuesday, October 16 at Sunken Gardens. The St. Petersburg City Beautiful Commission has recognized excellence in landscaping, tree preservation, building design and maintenance for local businesses and commercial properties in the city for more than forty years.

In early 2007, the Commission introduced a neighborhood component – the “Home of the Year” program. The Home of the Year Award recognizes the contributions made by residents for outstanding efforts in landscaping and maintenance of their homes. Each Neighborhood Association was encouraged to participate by submitting one nominee from within its boundaries to the City Beautiful Commission for consideration.

Attached is a list of award winners and their respective categories. In addition, several special awards were also announced:

The Elva Rouse Award, which honors individuals whose efforts have led to help perpetuate the beautification and environmental preservation of the city, was awarded to three individuals from the University Of South Florida College Of Marine Science for their work with the waters of Tampa Bay and the coastline of St. Petersburg: Dr. Mark Luther, Dr. Robert Weisberg, and Dr. Lianyaun Zheng.

A special Environmental Award was given to the University Of South Florida College Of Marine Science for the collective work done to protect our bays and waterways, particularly after the devastating oil spill of 1993.

The 2007 Peggy Allen Award was awarded to the St. Petersburg Women’s Chamber of Commerce for its numerous beautification projects and dedicated service to the community over many years. The Peggy Allen Award honors the private initiative of groups and organizations whose volunteer efforts help enhance the natural beauty of St. Petersburg and promote the public stewardship of the city’s natural resources.

Landscape and design professionals from outside the city served as judges for the awards: Rachel S. Rodgers, ASLA, president, LA Design Group (Tampa) and Jonathan H. Toner, ASLA, ISA, president, Terra Tectonics Design Group (Tampa).

The 15 member City Beautiful Commission is an all volunteer group, appointed by the Mayor and members of City Council. Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month (except for December) at 4 p.m. at the city’s Parks Department, 1400 19th Street N. in St. Petersburg.
