Milestones in the Development of St. Petersburg’s Park System

1894 The Park Improvement Association organized to construct a bandshell and wooden sidewalks in City Park, later renamed Williams Park.

1901 Arbor Day was organized town residents donated trees, shrubbery and rosebushes.

1910 The Downtown Waterfront Park System began with the establishment of the Public Park System.

1916 St. Petersburg had one of the largest public waterfronts in the nation.

1924 Parks and Recreation Departments were established.

1942 St. Petersburg had 38 parks on 282 acres of land.

1977 Leisure Services Agency was established.

1984 Charter amendment established designations of Charter and Non-Charter Park Property.
