Chief of Police  

 

Charles "Chuck" Harmon was appointed Chief of Police on December 18, 2001.

Chief Harmon joined the St. Petersburg Police Department in 1982, and in May of 1983 he was assigned as a patrol officer. In 1986, he became a Field Training Officer responsible for training new officers. The Civitan Club of St. Petersburg selected him as Field Training Officer of the Year in 1990. In October 1990, he was promoted to sergeant in the Field Training Unit where he supervised the field training officers. In October 1994, he was assigned as the Traffic Section Commander where he was responsible for management and supervision of the Selective Enforcement Unit, Traffic Homicide Investigations, D.U.I. Unit, Marine Unit, and the Police Officer Reserve Program. He established the Traffic Corridor Program and conducted the department's first D.U.I. sobriety checkpoints and D.U.I. saturation patrols. In July 1996, he was promoted to lieutenant in the Uniform Services Bureau, where, as a sector commander, he supervised and provided personnel development, training, scheduling and coordination for the sergeants, community police officers, patrol officers and street narcotic officers. In May 1998, he was promoted to major in charge of District III, which encompasses the west side of St. Petersburg. He managed and supervised all the district personnel and established relationships with our community and business partners. In May 1999, he was promoted to assistant chief of Uniform Services Bureau and was responsible for the supervision of 350 employees, and his varied responsibilities included: administration, patrol, community policing, training, marine, K-9, traffic, and fleet management. He prepared and administered a budget of more than 27 million dollars and was responsible for all problem-solving efforts and initiatives relating to crime patterns or trends in the city.

Chief Harmon graduated from Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Florida in 1979 with an associate of arts degree in general studies and an associate of science degree in criminal justice. He earned a bachelor of science degree in criminology from Florida State University in 1982 and a master's degree in public administration from Troy State University in 2001.

He is actively involved in community service where he has served as a soccer coach in youth activities and has volunteered for a variety of events such as the Urban League Crime Run, American Heart Association, Paint St. Pete Proud, and was a 1999 graduate of Leadership St. Pete. His hobbies include golf, fishing and bowling.
