Tip Line - 892-5000

What is it?

The St. Petersburg Police Department provides a confidential TIP LINE (892-5000) as an alternative means by which individuals can relay valuable information in an anonymous manner. The department’s goal in providing this service is to obtain information on criminal activity that is unattainable through conventional methods, and to assist the department in investigating criminal activity that might otherwise go unreported.

Callers are encouraged to leave their names and phone numbers but may choose to leave information anonymously. Whenever someone contacts the St. Petersburg Police Department with information concerning criminal activity, we attempt to protect their identity to the extent that the law allows.

Telephone calls received on the TIP LINE are answered by department personnel. Once the information is obtained, department personnel distribute the information received to the proper division, according to established procedures. In some instances, criminal investigations may be initiated from this information. In all cases, the information received will be thoroughly evaluated by the appropriate division.

Take the first step in helping us make our community more safe by calling the TIP LINE when you have personal knowledge of criminal activity.

When to use it

Use the TIP LINE to report information concerning:

Narcotics (Drugs), Murder, Rape, Robbery, Auto Theft, Burglary, Arson, Assault, and other serious crimes.

DO NOT use the TIP LINE to report minor incidents such as abandoned vehicles, loud music or other calls of similar nature.

How does it work?

When a citizen calls 892-5000, a call taker will answer the line. Speak clearly and explain the activity in as much detail as you can. You do not have to provide your name, address, or telephone number.

Be as specific as possible in providing the following information:

  • Location of building or house, names of nearest intersecting streets
  • Description of persons involved, such as height, sex, age, weight, clothing, hair color, eye color, skin color, any distinguishing marks, names if known, and if there are any weapons involved
  • Description of vehicles involved including make, model, color, and license plate

What if I want to report a drug transaction or criminal activity that is happening right now?

If you witness a drug crime or any other crime, such as break-ins occurring now, shootings, fires, injury traffic accidents, fights or displays of weapons, dial 911 immediately.

If the call is a non-emergency (not a life or death situation), use the police department non-emergency number
