The Sanitation Department disposes of 328,000 tons of refuse per year. In performance of their duty, sanitation employees service 78,000 residential accounts totaling 8,112,000 pickups annually; in addition, they service 6,200 commercial accounts. This department provides recycling centers throughout the City and processes over 43,618 tons of recyclables at five brush sites annually, recycling 3,854 tons of newspapers, glass and other materials, and more than 42,184 tons of yard clippings into free mulch. The community appearance division removes graffiti and snipe signs and keeps vacant lots clear of overgrowth and debris. Sanitation is also responsible for removing dead animals, furniture & appliances collection, rodent control treatment, and refuse container repair and replacement. The Sanitation shop maintains 200 pieces of equipment, which includes 125 pieces of heavy equipment. RecyclaMat / Brush Site Locations. Yard waste is collected at our 5 brush sites and processed into mulch that is available at no charge for the residents of St. Petersburg.
