City Beautiful Commission

Overview

To enhance and safeguard the beauty of our natural resources and city landscapes, thereby enriching the quality of life for our community.

Function of Commission

  • Assist and promote public programs/activities that will further the beautification and protection of the natural resources in and around St. Petersburg.
  • Assist the Parks and Recreation Department with the initiating, planning, directing and coordinating of the following programs: the Annual City Beautiful Awards, the Gift Tree Program, and the Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum including the Brick Program.
  • Assist with the formulation and implementation of City statutes and ordinances concerning property maintenance, urban forestry, beautification standards, signage and natural resources.
  • Advise City Council in matters pertaining to the beautification of the city that will result in a more attractive and well-maintained city.
  • Assist in any other function and duty assigned to it by the City Council.

Member Responsibilities

Members have the right and responsibility to actively participate in the decision-making process of the Commission. Responsibilities of each Member include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Attend regular scheduled meetings and any special sessions as called by the Executive Committee and any separate standing or working committee meetings of their chosen participation.
  • Review materials and documentation prior to voting on matters before the Commission.
  • Participate in Commission activities throughout the year during community events.
  • Attend and participate in the annual City Beautification Awards Program, and submit City Beautification Awards nominations.
  • Identify potential projects and events.
  • Identify potential partners and sources of financial and in-kind support for projects and events.
  • Log all volunteer time (outside of meetings), materials, and services provided to the Commission, and submit such logs to the Commission on the monthly basis.
  • Join and serve on at least one standing committee.

Meeting Dates & Times

The board meets on the second Monday of each month at 4 p.m. at City Hall in Room 100. The Urban Forestry Committee also meets on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. following the board meeting at City Hall in Room 100.

City Beautification Awards

The City is accepting nominations for City Beautification Awards in recognition of excellence in landscaping and building design. This landscaping award recognizes outstanding achievement in business and residential properties for exterior curb appeal, landscaping design and yard maintenance, and overall contribution to the character of the neighborhood. All nominations must be within the city limits and the landscape must be in place for at least one year. Nominations will be accepted through July 16, 2023, at 11:59 p.m.
