St. Pete City Council District 7 Vacancy

UPDATE - October, 13, 2022: On Thursday, October 13, 2022, after hearing from six applicants, the St. Petersburg City Council selected John Malone (Muhammad) to be the next Council Member for Council District 7.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 20 at 9 a.m. in City Council Chambers.

For Interested Applicants:

The City Council of the City of St. Petersburg has opened the application process to appoint a new Council Member to fill the District 7 vacancy. In order to be considered, an applicant must submit an application through the process identified below.

Pursuant to the City Charter, the person appointed must have been a resident of District 7 for at least 12 months and must remain a resident of the district throughout the term of office. The City’s redistricting process is currently underway, and the redistricting commission has voted to propose changes to district boundaries—some of which would affect District 7.

This District 7 Map has been prepared to illustrate the impact of the anticipated changes, as follows:

  • The cross-hatched “intersecting area” is currently in the district and is anticipated to remain in the district.  Accordingly, a person living in this area is eligible for appointment and is unlikely to be affected by redistricting.

  • The peach-shaded areas are currently in the district but are anticipated to be removed. A person living in one of these areas is currently eligible for appointment but would likely become ineligible to hold office once the redistricting process is complete (likely in November 2022).

  • The blue-shaded areas are not currently in the district. Accordingly, a person living in one of these areas cannot satisfy the residency requirements described above and is, therefore, ineligible for appointment.

Eligible applicants are required to submit the following information to be considered:

Cover letter explaining why they wish to be appointed
Resume that addresses, at a minimum, education, employment history, any business or professional licenses held, any government boards or committees on which an applicant serves or has served, and participation in civic or charitable organizations
Signed and notarized affidavit concerning eligibility requirements (form listed below)
Florida financial disclosure Form 1 and Form 6 (available below)
