Application Deadline Nears for St. Petersburg Cultural Exchange Program

St. Petersburg, Fla. (February 29, 2016) – Friday,March 11, is the deadline for high school juniors living in St. Petersburg and are interested in visiting Takamatsu, Japan, to apply as a Student Ambassador during St. Petersburg’s annual summer Sister City cultural exchange program. To be considered, completed applications must be received by 5 p.m., Friday, March 11.  Applications are also being accepted for St. Petersburg families interested in hosting visiting Takamatsu Student Ambassadors this summer.

Prospective Student Ambassadors must reside in St. Petersburg and be currently enrolled as a high school junior. Along with the application, students must submit an original essay; a class photo; a high school transcript listing honors and activities; and two reference letters, including one from a school faculty member. Two letters of introduction to the prospective host family—one written by the student and one from their parents—must accompany the application. All eligible students are encouraged to apply, regardless of their financial situation. Completed applications must be received by the Office of Cultural Affairs, City Hall, 175 Fifth St. N., by 5 p.m., Friday, March 11. Since becoming a Sister City in 1961, St. Petersburg Student Ambassadors have learned about life in Takamatsu by living with a host family, going to high school, sightseeing and sharing cultural experiences. Former Ambassadors have used the visits to further their cultural education by studying international relations, international business or Japanese studies.

Host Families Needed - St. Petersburg families are also encouraged to apply as host families for visiting Japanese high school students this summer. Previous Takamatsu student ambassadors have participated in daily activities with their host family, shopping, trips to museums, the beach, or area theme parks.
