LIBRARIES HOST DR. SEUSS BOOK BASH, SCAVENGER HUNT, TEEN TECH WEEK AND MORE, MARCH 7-28
St. Petersburg, Fla. (March 2, 2015) – The St. Petersburg Library System celebrates the Mirror Lake Community Library’s Centennial and 100 years of library service to the public with a Dr. Seuss Book Bash, a youth scavenger hunt, Teen Tech Week and Poet Laureate Peter Meinke kicking off the SunLit festival this month.

In honor of the National Education Association’s Read Around America Day and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, the Mirror Lake Community Library, 280 Fifth St. N., will celebrate youth literacy on Saturday, March 7 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fun activities on the Mirror Lake library lawn include a bounce house, balloon creations, crafts, games, movies, story characters and lots of fun! FRIENDS OF MAIN LIBRARY FEATURE PETER MEINKE MARCH 7
The Friends of Main Library will host Peter Meinke, Poet Laureate of St. Petersburg, at the SunLit Festival kickoff at the Main Library, 3745 Ninth Ave. N., on Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m. Meinke, professor emeritus of Literature at Eckerd College who became the first St. Petersburg Poet Laureate in 2009, will be reading from his work - including poetry books, short stories and children’s books. He will receive the first annual award for lifetime achievement in letters. Award-winning writer Sterling Watson, co-director of the Writers in Paradise conference at Eckerd College, will be a keynote speaker. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. The SunLit Festival, a spring celebration of literature in the Sunshine State, runs March 7-15, culminating with the Florida Antiquarian Book Fair. MIRROR LAKE CENTENNIAL SCAVENGER HUNT FOR AGES 3-11, MARCH 7 to 28
The Youth Services division of the St. Petersburg Library System presents a scavenger hunt in celebration of the centennial of the Mirror Lake Community Library, 280 Fifth St. N., starting Saturday, March 7 to March 28. Youth ages 3 to 11 are welcome to participate and kids who successfully complete the scavenger hunt will be awarded a prize book. ST. PETERSBURG LIBRARY SYSTEM CELEBRATES TEEN TECH WEEK, MARCH 8-14
Teens are invited to help kick off Teen Tech Week featuring a History of Video Gaming presented by M & M Game, at the St. Petersburg Main Library, 3745 Ninth Ave. N., on Sunday, March 8 from 12:15 to 2 p.m. From Atari to Super Nintendo Sega Genesis to the current systems, video gaming has changed. Learn about where video gaming started and where it is now. See what became popular and what was a flash in the pan. Teens will get a chance to experience playing some of the vintage systems.
And on Saturday, March 14, from 2 to 4 p.m., the Main Library will host Retro Techno. Have you ever seen a manual typewriter or played on an old video game? Technology changes and changes fast! Take a look at and touch what used to be the latest, greatest electronics.
Teen Tech Week is a national initiative sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association. It began in 2007 to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of digital media, especially the non-print resources offered through libraries, such as e-books, e-readers, databases, audio books, and social media.
