Sandbag supply exhausted
St. Petersburg, Fla (September 8, 2017) -- Unprecedented demand for sand bags in advance of Hurricane Irma has exhausted the supply in the city of St. Petersburg.
City workers -- aided by countless volunteers -- distributed 152,000 bags since mid-afternoon Tuesday.
As operations at four sites wound down Thursday night, officials knew they had supplied all they could.
"We went through a season's-worth of bags in three days," said John Norris, Director of Stormwater, Pavement and Traffic Operations for the city.
The City of Gulfport does still have bags, and they will be distributing them -- filled with sand brought in from Gulfport's municipal beaches -- as long as they last.
Gulfport officials say they're not turning anyone who has a need for bags away. The distribution site is at 2401 53rd Street. S in Gulfport.
