City of St. Petersburg to Hire Chief Equity Officer

May 8, 2023 - St. Petersburg Mayor Kenneth T. Welch announces the new position of Chief Equity Officer, a role created to support the administration's focus on Inclusive Progress, and in response to the Structural Racism Study conducted by the City of St. Petersburg in 2021. The new Chief Equity Officer will be a member of the Mayor's Cabinet and will report directly to the Mayor's Chief of Staff, Jordan "Doyle" Walsh.

"Intentional equity and inclusive progress are foundational to my administration," said Mayor Welch. "The Chief Equity Officer will be a key member of my leadership team who will ensure that equity and inclusion are fully integrated into City government policies, procedures, and practices. An accountable and responsive government is only possible when our commitment to equity is shown, not just through words, but through action."

The Chief Equity Officer will have "oversight and direction over the City's efforts to advance racial equity and inclusion within City government in collaboration with community stakeholders."

About the Structural Racism Study
In 2021, the City of St. Petersburg commissioned a study team led by University of South Florida, in partnership with several community members, to examine both the historical and modern-day impact that structural racism has had on the lives of Black people in the City of St. Petersburg, Florida. The examination and identification of the factors of structural racism that specifically impact Black residents and communities in St. Pete as they relate to education, the criminal-legal system, and economic development within St. Petersburg were evaluated. https://www.stpete.org/residents/current_projects/planning_projects/structural_racism_study.php
