34th St. S. Improvements
Project Overview
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is implementing a resurfacing project for the 5-mile section of 34th St. from 22nd Ave. N. to 54th Ave. S in St. Petersburg. Anticipated improvements include:
- New asphalt and pavement markings
- Continuous sidewalks with curb ramps for pedestrians
- New crosswalk with pedestrian-activated lights at 3rd Ave. S.
In addition to this resurfacing work, consistent with the City’s Skyway Marina District Plan, the 2-mile section from 22nd Ave. S. to 54th Ave. S. will include the following additional improvements:
- Re-purposing of the outside lanes from general-purpose vehicle lanes to red, Bus, and Turn (BAT) lanes (i.e. shared bus and right-turn lanes)
- Widening sidewalks on both sides of 34th St.
- New traffic signal with pedestrian crosswalks at 30th Ave. S.
Expected Outcomes
- 45 mph speed limit lowered to 40 mph in designated areas
- This project will result in improved access, safety, and better transit opportunities
Timeline
February 2023: Construction Start - Construction has commenced with sidewalk and utilities work first to be underway. Construction will take approximately two years excluding weather delays.
Spring 2025: Estimate Construction Completion
Complete Streets Initiative
This project is part of St. Petersburg’s Complete Streets initiative. Complete Streets involves planning, design, operation, and maintenance to create streets that are safe and convenient for all users of the roadway, including people who are walking, riding bicycles, motorists, people with disabilities, users and operators of public transit, seniors, children, and movers of commercial goods.
