St. Petersburg’s Composting Program Returns!

April 21, 2023 - The City’s free residential compost bin program is back! The program relaunches on Earth Day, April 22, 2023, with resources to help participants be more successful in their composting.

What’s new this time?

  • The program remains free and available to single-family residential customers to help residents minimize their environmental impact by turning kitchen and yard waste into usable, nutrient-rich fertilizer.

  • The program now requires residents to attend an in-person educational workshop prior to obtaining their compost bin.

  • During the first year of operation of St. Petersburg’s Composting Program, feedback from users indicated that more education and resources were needed.

The Program was first introduced in 2019 to enthusiastic reception. In late 2022, the program was put on hold to allow the City to modify the program based on feedback from users.

“Composting can seem daunting at first, and our new educational workshops are designed to set customers up for success with how-to instructions, troubleshooting and more,” said Sanitation Director Willie Joseph. “We want to provide all the tools we can to enable our residents to live sustainably and do their part to reduce household waste.”
