St. Petersburg's Youth Programming Shifts from Summer to Back-to-School

August 11, 2023 - The City of St. Petersburg's Community Enrichment Administration enjoyed a successful summer of youth programming. From swim lessons to nature camps, reading programs to meals offered through Summer Break Spot, tens of thousands of youth and families across St. Petersburg were impacted by the numerous programs and resources offered by the City.

"Summer is a critical time for our kids - they're out of school without their normal routine, schedule or structure," said Mike Jefferis, Community Enrichment Administrator. "Our team fills that gap with camps, meals, literacy programs, and even employment opportunities."

The City provided the following services and programs to youth and families this summer:

• 3,733 elementary and middle school aged youth participated in Parks and Recreation camp programs. 
• 40,775 breakfast meals and 53,374 lunch meals were served through Summer Break Spot, the Parks and Recreation Food Service Program.
• 5,013 children and caregivers participated in library early literacy programs.
• 2,495 elementary-aged children participated in library reading programs.
• 135 teens participated in library reading programs.
• 4,032 children were enrolled in swimming lessons.
• 115 youth under the age of 18 were employed by Parks & Recreation.
• 448 young golfers participated in the First Tee of St. Petersburg golf camp. 

What’s Next:
City of St. Petersburg year-round public pools have resumed their regular operating hours. Before and after school care – in addition to other year-round youth programming – begins at City recreation centers. Before and after school care registration is now open. Learn more at stpeteparksrec.org.
