City of St. Petersburg to Extend Sandbag Hours as Florida Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday Begins

August 25, 2023 - As we enter the most active period for hurricane season, the City of St. Petersburg is encouraging residents to prepare over the weekend by picking up free sandbags from the City and taking advantage of Florida's Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday.

Sandbag Update:
The City of St. Petersburg offers free sandbags for residents all year long - 5 days per week during non-emergencies - at the Pavement and Traffic Operations Building (1744 9th Ave. N.). 

Due to potential tropical storm activity in the days ahead, the City will extend operational hours at this sandbag site throughout the weekend to help residents prepare. This non-emergency location will be open until 7 p.m. today, August 25, and from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday, August 26, and Sunday, August 27.

Sandbag Need-To-Knows:

  1. Each household receives a maximum of 10 sandbags.

  2. Staff will be on hand to assist seniors and others who may be unable to fill and load their own sandbags.

  3. Residents must provide proof of residence (such as a driver's license) to receive sandbags.

Sales Tax Holiday Details:
Additionally, Florida's 2023 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday starts Saturday, Aug.26, and runs through Friday, Sept. 8. 

During this time, Floridians can purchase everything from generators and carbon monoxide detectors to everyday household items like dish detergent, exclusive of the state's 6% sales tax. More at: https://pinellas.gov/news/disaster-preparedness-sales-tax-holiday-to-take-place-aug-26-sept-8/

City of St. Petersburg Emergency Management is actively monitoring the tropical weather, and will continue to do so throughout the weekend. Additional preparedness information will be shared should the storm shift towards St. Petersburg.
